Guard dogs for sale: know what you are really shopping for

The phrase covers a barking house dog, a trained family protector and a flock-guarding working dog. They are three different animals with three different risks.

Why "guard dog" needs unpacking

Sellers use the term loosely, and buyers hear what they hope for. A dog that announces visitors, a dog that physically confronts an intruder and a dog that lives with sheep and drives off predators all get called guard dogs. Paying for the wrong one is expensive and sometimes dangerous.

Nothing on this site is for sale. It is a short reference that helps you describe your need accurately, so any professional you eventually speak to can answer the right question.

The five parts of this guide

A quick self-check before you read on

Ask yourself

  • Do I want a warning, a deterrent or a physical response?
  • Is the dog for a house, a business, a farm or a family?
  • Who else will be around it every day?
  • What does my insurer say about the breed?

Be careful if

  • A seller promises the dog will guard "automatically"
  • You are asked to pay by wire or gift card
  • You are not allowed to see where the dog lives
  • You are being rushed

How a referral request works

  1. Describe the property and the job

Share your ZIP code and what you want the dog to do. Be specific about children, visitors and other animals.

  2. K9PN refers the request

An independent professional or program whose area covers you may get in touch. K9PN does not sell or breed dogs.

  3. Run your own checks

Use the sourcing page to verify records, premises and payment terms.
